2 WVU players plead to drinking charges (AP)

West Virginia basketball players Joe Mazzulla and Cam Thoroughman have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a July scuffle with police at a Pittsburgh Pirates game. The two were charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness Monday in Pittsburgh Municipal Court. Other charges were dropped. Each player was ordered to pay $222 in fines and court costs.

Standout Santa Clara center John Bryant was recovering Monday from stab wounds to the back stemming from an off-campus incident early Saturday, Santa Clara Police said. “Yes, John Bryant was a victim of assault,” Santa Clara Police Sgt. Not guilty plea in Smith nephew stabbing (AP)

A 19-year-old Worcester man has pleaded not guilty in connection with the fatal stabbing of a college student who was the nephew of University of Minnesota basketball coach Tubby Smith. Andre Thompson was arraigned Monday in Worcester Central District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, and armed assault with intent to murder.

Ex-Sooner Tisdale OK after amputation (AP)

Former Oklahoma basketball star Wayman Tisdale says he’s doing well after surgery last month to amputate part of his right leg. Tisdale appeared in a video message at halftime of the Sooners’ football game against TCU on Saturday night, telling fans he’s at peace following the operation. Tisdale, a three-time All-American in the 1980s, is Oklahoma’s all-time leading scorer.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert says the speculation that LeBron James will leave Cleveland in two years is out of line and “an insult to the city.” Gilbert says it’s nothing more than conjecture from bored sports reporters. He says James has given no indication that he plans to leave for New York after his contract expires in 2010.

Houston to attempt comeback with Knicks (AP)

Allan Houston signed with the New York Knicks on Thursday and will attempt another comeback with his former team. Houston is fourth on the Knicks’ career scoring list, trailing only Hall of Famers Patrick Ewing, Walt Frazier and Willis Reed. He will be in training camp next week with the franchise he led to the 1999 NBA finals.
