During the 1980s and early 1990s, the same scene was repeated year after year at the open practices at the Final Four. In a corner of each arena where the college basketball season ended that season, a group of coaches attending the national convention sat spread out over several rows. Bob Knight was always in the group, as was Mike Krzyzewski and several others.

Calipari becomes Memphis’ wins leader (AP)

During his years as a Memphis assistant, Derek Kellogg had seen the Tigers’ formula in many of their wins. Let the opponent hang around for a bit, then start throwing more players at them, run them until they wear down and pull away in the second half. Monday night, Kellogg, in his first year as Massachusetts coach, was on the receiving end of the tactic.

Down on the bench, interim coach Russ Pennell patrolled the area where Lute Olson presided for 24 seasons. Up in the McKale Center grandstand, there were some 1,500 empty seats. Dawson’s 56-yard FG helps lift Browns (AP)

Phil Dawson wasn’t about to quit during Cleveland’s latest fourth-quarter meltdown. Turned out, neither did the rest of the Browns. With a confident nod to coach Romeo Crennel, Dawson went out and calmly hit a career-long 56-yard field goal with 1:39 left that sent Cleveland to a 29-27 win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night Dawson’s fifth field goal of the game capped a wild finish.

No. 11 Purdue routs E. Michigan 87-58 (AP)

Eastern Michigan got Purdue’s attention, and then it was over. The Eagles jumped to an 8-0 lead on the 11th-ranked Boilermakers on Monday night. Sufficiently awakened, Purdue responded with a 26-6 run and never was challenged after that as Robbie Hummel scored 18 points in the Boilermakers’ 87-58 victory over Eastern Michigan in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Curry’s 33 lead No. 21 Davidson to win (AP)

Most everyone else is talking about Stephen Curry’s switch to point guard this season. Davidson coach Bob McKillop wants to discuss the Wildcats’ defense. Curry had 33 points and nine assists Monday night and the 21st-ranked Wildcats beat James Madison 99-64 in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, a rout that began with an 11-0 start fueled by defense.

NJIT suffers record 35th straight loss (AP)

The New Jersey Institute of Technology suffered its 35th straight loss, the most of any Division I team, falling to Penn State 74-47 on Monday in the Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Highlanders’ 35th straight defeat passed the previous NCAA Division I record for consecutive losses set by Sacramento State between Dec.

With starting point guard A.J. Price sitting out to rest a sprained ankle, Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun was hoping another leader would step forward for the second-ranked Huskies against Hartford. Craig Austrie did that in a literal way Monday, stepping into the gaps in the Hawks’ zone defense and hitting 15-foot jump shots.

No. 2 Texas Tech gears up for Sooners (AP)

Texas Tech has never beaten Oklahoma on the road under Mike Leach. Another week, another never-before to conquer for the nation’s No. 2 team. And in a season flush with firsts for the Red Raiders, a win in Norman against No. 5 Oklahoma on Saturday would give Texas Tech its only Big 12 South title and move it closer to playing for an national title.
