Jim Harbaugh set the record straight Tuesday: He plans to stay put coaching at Stanford. There has been speculation in recent weeks that Harbaugh might interview for NFL openings in Detroit or Oakland and that he reportedly had met with the New York Jets last Thursday about their head coaching vacancy.

The Denver Nuggets needed two big nights from role players and one veteran move from Chauncey Billups to hold off Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks. Billups drew a late foul on Jason Terry and made two free throws with 2.2 seconds left, and the Nuggets overcame 44 points from Nowitzki to beat the Mavericks 99-97 on Tuesday night.

Jayhawks top Kansas St. in Big 12 opener (AP)

Sherron Collins scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half, Tyshawn Taylor added 20 points and Kansas beat Kansas State 87-71 on Tuesday night in its Big 12 opener. It was the 18th straight conference opening win for the Jayhawks, who’ve won the last four Big 12 titles. Kansas (12-4, 1-0) jumped on Kansas State at the start, scoring the game’s first 18 points.

Penn St.’s Maybin declares for NFL draft (AP)

All-American defensive end Aaron Maybin will skip his final two seasons at Penn State and declare for the NFL draft. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound sophomore led the Big Ten with 12 sacks and finished with 49 tackles — 20 for loss — as the Nittany Lions went 11-1 before losing 38-24 to Southern California in the Rose Bowl.

Sidney Crosby promised he’d try and lead slumping Pittsburgh with words as much by his actions. Usually, though, the way Sid the Kid delivers with the puck helps the Penguins more than a pep talk. Against another sellout crowd in Philadelphia that bellowed nothing but derogatory words toward the Pittsburgh captain, Crosby and the Penguins showed a flicker of hope their season can still be salvaged.

Scott Pioli, who helped build and lead a dynasty in New England, is now in charge of a Kansas City franchise which hasn’t won a playoff game in 14 years. The 43-year-old Pioli will be introduced on Wednesday as Chiefs general manager, replacing Carl Peterson. “He will have complete charge of football operations,” Ryan Petkoff, a spokesman for Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, told The Associated Press.

Burress faces trial due to car damage (AP)

Plaxico Burress is in court again. A civil trial is scheduled to begin Wednesday in Pennsylvania to determine how much the New York Giants wide receiver will have to pay in damages over a car he leased that ended up being impounded by New York City police. New York police said Tuesday that they impounded the car in August 2005 in connection with a shooting in the Bronx.

William Buford scored 19 points and Ohio State caught fire behind the arc to beat Indiana 77-53 on Tuesday night. Jon Diebler added 17 points, B.J. Mullens 14, Evan Turner 13 and Jeremie Simmons 12 for Ohio State (12-3, 2-2 Big Ten), which has split six games since starting 9-0. Simmons added eight assists, while Turner and Diebler each had five.
