Joe Paterno felt like he was in charge again this spring. With his surgically replaced hip, Penn State’s 82-year-old coach was back on the field coaching his team the way he likes. He’s more mobile, more energetic and more patient these days, free of the pain that had dogged him for two years. The Nittany Lions are truly his team again.

Tim Brown, Torretta in new Hall class (AP)

Tim Brown played on a high school football team that won four games in three seasons and he went to Notre Dame thinking about a career as a computer scientist. Gino Torretta went to Miami because Stanford didn’t want him. He wasn’t sure he’d ever get to start for the Hurricanes, but football was at least a path to a free education.

USC to headline Diamond Head Classic (AP)

Seven of the eight teams that will participate in the inaugural Diamond Head Classic in December have been announced. They are: host Hawaii, Southern California, SMU, College of Charleston, Saint Mary’s, UNLV and Western Michigan. The last team is yet to be determined. Four of the teams are coming off postseason appearances with USC playing in the NCAA tournament.

Pitt seniors Porter, Duhart to transfer (AP)

Senior wide receiver T.J. Porter and senior defensive lineman Tommie Duhart have left Pitt’s football team and plan to transfer to another school, according to a statement issued by coach Dave Wannstedt. Both players were suspended from spring practice for disciplinary reasons and were dropped from the depth chart.

Arizona G Johnson to transfer (AP)

Sophomore guard Zane Johnson has decided to transfer from Arizona. The 6-foot-5 Johnson played in 33 games for the Wildcats last season, averaging 4.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 19.1 minutes. He started 13 games. Johnson has not decided what school he will attend, the university said Wednesday in a news release.

Indiana gave Kellen Lewis a second chance. The quarterback-turned-receiver won’t get a third. The former All-Big Ten player was kicked off Indiana’s football team Wednesday for an undisclosed violation of team rules, just over a year after he drew a four-month suspension for other violations. Mexican Open postponed due to swine flu fears

The Nationwide Tour has postponed the Mexico Open golf tournament scheduled for May 21-24 because of the swine flu outbreak.

Navy commits to 2013 Armed Forces Bowl (AP)

Navy has signed an agreement to appear in the 2013 Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Tex. The Armed Forces Bowl has featured a military theme since 2006. Air Force has appeared in the past two games held at Amon G. Carter Stadium. This year’s game, slated for Dec. 31, will match teams from Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference.

Coach Peterson back at Appalachian State (AP)

Buzz Peterson has changed his mind and is returning for a second stint coaching Appalachian State. The school announced on Wednesday that Peterson has accepted the job, three weeks after initially turning it down. He’ll replace Houston Fancher, who was fired last month. Peterson went 79-39 in four seasons at ASU between 1996-2000.
