Michael Phelps has a whole day off. In Rome, no less. Will he tour the Vatican? Check out the Trevi Fountain? Visit the Colosseum? "I've got to try to get as much rest as possible," Phelps said. Guess his mother is here for the sightseeing. Phelps is all business, even when he's swimming a reduced schedule that actually provided him a break on Thursday.

Landon Donovan is looking forward to playing with Tim Howard behind him again. Facing Howard was a frustrating reminder of how good the U.S. national goaltender is. Howard made six saves in regulation and stopped three shots on penalty kicks to lead Everton past the Major League Soccer team in the MLS All-Star game 4-3 in penalty kicks on Wednesday night.

Greek Squash Has Royal Flavor

The King & I: The Greek national squash team (including player King Constantine II of Greece) after squaring off against the British RoyalNavy With all the fuss about the impending decision on squash’s inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games, I decided to make a foray to the sources of the Games, Greece. In Athens I met with George Barletis, the president of the Greek Squash Federation. A charming, friendly 72 year old, Barletis grew up outside Athens and has been playing squash ever since he moved to the city, in 1952. He has been the go-to guy when someone rings up from the embassy looking for a game and hit regularly with Clinton-era U.S. ambassadors Thomas Niles and Nicholas Burns, as well as Senator Arlen Specter. The Greek Squash Open was started in 1945—two years before (!) they launched their own national championships (for men; the women’s did not begin until 1982). It hosted Jonah Barrington when he was launching the men’s world tour and more recently used a portable glass court. The main Greek professional of note these days is Eliza Kargioti, a 23 year old who is ranked 149 on the WISPA tour.
