In 2006, Goldman Sachs C.E.O. Henry Paulson reluctantly became Treasury secretary for an unpopular, lame-duck president. History will score his decisions, but the former Dartmouth offensive lineman definitely left everything on the field. In private conversations throughout his term, as crisis followed crisis—Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, A.I.G., and so forth—Paulson gave the author the inside track, from the political lunacy and bailout plans to the sleepless nights and flat-out fear, as he battled the greatest economic disruption in 80 years.

Angels acquire LHP Kazmir from Rays (AP)

The Los Angeles Angels did more than just upgrade their unsteady rotation. They added a two-time All-Star who's only 25 years old. Scott Kazmir was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the AL West leaders Friday night, a major move for a high-scoring team that already had World Series aspirations. The Angels landed Kazmir for two minor leaguers and a player to be named.

Officially, Tom Brady has a "sore shoulder," the result of being crushed to the turf by massive Albert Haynesworth. It caused enough discomfort for him to spend quite a while on the bench flexing and rotating his throwing arm, trying to work out whatever kinks where there. It could be nothing.

Webb Simpson has found enough birdies on long, tough and wet Liberty National for a 3-under 68 to build a two-shot lead in the Barclays, the opening playoff event on the PGA Tour.

Pujols’ walkoff homer lifts Cards (AP)

John Smoltz had a successful first home start with the St. Louis Cardinals. Albert Pujols made sure it was a great night for the whole team. Smoltz struck out six and allowed a run in six innings in his home debut, while Pujols put three poor at-bats behind him and hit his 41st homer leading off the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

Pitt suspends F Brown for fall semester (AP)

Pittsburgh has suspended forward Gilbert Brown from the men's basketball team for the fall semester because of academic reasons. The school made the announcement Friday. Brown, a redshirt junior, played in 32 games as a reserve last season when the Panthers went 31-5, reached No. 1 for three weeks and fell one win shy of the Final Four.
