With so many streaks on the line for No. 17 Utah, perhaps the most important is the eight consecutive bowl game victories. To extend that streak, the Utes have to take care of business each week. A non-BCS team has no wiggle room if a major bowl is to be in its future. Utah, two touchdown favorites at San Jose State (0-1) on Saturday, must win and look good doing so.

USC LB has heart problem, can’t play (AP)

Southern California freshman Frankie Telfort has a heart problem that will prevent him from playing for the Trojans. Telfort, a 17-year-old Miami native considered one of the top linebacker prospects in the country, has been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a serious genetic heart condition that has figured prominently in the lives and deaths of many notable athletes in recent years.

The timing could hardly be worse for Charlotte to be leading a major fundraiser — seeking to raise $20 million so the school can start a football program. Unemployment is more than 11 percent in this city so reliant on the financial industry. Numerous construction projects have stalled or been scrapped.

Western Carolina DB dies after workout (AP)

A junior defensive back at Western Carolina has died after participating in a voluntary offseason workout. Western Carolina spokesman Daniel Hooker says Ja'Quayvin Smalls collapsed Wednesday and was pronounced dead about 7:30 p.m. at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva. The school says he collapsed while running during an evening workout session.

Georgia LG Strickland to miss season (AP)

Georgia guard Tanner Strickland will miss the 2009 season with a shoulder injury. Tanner, a sophomore, will need surgery following an injury to his right shoulder in offseason workouts. Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson said Wednesday a full recovery is expected for Tanner. Tanner was listed as Georgia's starting left guard on the team's preseason depth chart.

2 Washington RBs ruled ineligible (AP)

Washington running backs Brandon Johnson and David Freeman have been ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming season. The announcement from the school came Tuesday. Johnson, a junior from Hawthorne, Calif., rushed for 194 yards in nine games last season, making him the team's third-leading rusher.

Ex-Hawaii QB Chang arrested, released (AP)

Former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, one of the most prolific passers in college football history, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and released without charges pending further investigation. The 27-year-old Chang was arrested at his Mililani home Thursday after a woman alleged her camera was taken away from her while she was filming a brawl last month in the Pearlridge area.

Northern Iowa OL Steichen arrested (AP)

Northern Iowa offensive lineman Austin Steichen and two other men have been arrested in connection with an alleged assault. Arnold Park Police Chief Alan Krueger said Thursday that Steichen, his brother, Andrew Steichen, and Adam Dwyer were arrested on Tuesday after a fight that left an unidentified man unconscious.
