They pressured Germany the entire match and peppered its goalkeeper so many times a score seemed inevitable. Finally, with a mighty swing of his head that sent his long, curly locks flying, Spain’s Carles Puyol got it done. With the World Cup final in reach — and Queen Sofia cheering from the stands — La Roja came through with their best game yet.

Tim Lincecum is a little tired of talking about getting the best of Roy Oswalt. That’s probably because it’s already come up twice before this season. Lincecum outpitched Oswalt in a matchup of National League aces, and the San Francisco Giants managed just enough offense for a 3-1 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

Jamie Moyer shrugged it off. Nothing was going to bother him on this night. Moyer tied the record for most homers allowed by surrendering his 505th longball but that was his only blemish in eight crisp innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1 on Tuesday. Russell Branyan went deep for Cleveland in the second, hitting a long drive to the second deck in right that left Moyer…

South Korea reached the second round of the World Cup by holding Nigeria to a 2-2 draw Tuesday in their final group game. Defender Lee Jung-soo and Park Chu-young scored for South Korea after Kalu Uche had given Nigeria the lead in the 12th minute. Ayegbeni Yakubu netted a 69th minute penalty to draw Nigeria level again, but the Africans squandered a couple of good opportunities to score a winner.

Strutting into the stadium dancing and singing, Bafana Bafana turned its final game at the World Cup into a rollicking party for all of South Africa. All that was missing was enough goals to see them through to the next round. For France, Tuesday’s 2-1 loss completed a miserable meltdown. With each team needing a big win to have any chance of moving on from Group A, both stuck to character.

Maybe Uruguay is the best example of how strong South American nations have been in the first round of the World Cup. The last team to qualify for the tournament, Uruguay needed to beat Costa Rica in a playoff to get to South Africa. The Uruguayans have looked like anything but an outsider, though, and on Tuesday beat Mexico 1-0 to win Group A.

The Dallas Mavericks’ season-high winning streak has reached 10, and there’s not a blowout in the bunch. This time, they needed a big game off the bench from rookie Roddy Beaubois to keep the streak alive. Dirk Nowitzki had 31 points and 12 rebounds, Beaubois added a career-high 22 points, and the Mavericks extended the longest active streak in the league with a 108-100 victory over the…

Dampened by rain, slowed by mud and trailing late in the fourth quarter, Daryll Clark was determined to get Penn State some points.
