Tennessee has turned down a chance to face Southern California and coach Lane Kiffin in the 2011 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Volunteers athletic director Mike Hamilton said Wednesday he’s been approached several times by Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan about a potential 2011 matchup in Atlanta.

S. Florida’s Heath gets 3-year extension (AP)

South Florida basketball coach Stan Heath has agreed to a three-year contract extension after leading the Bulls to their most successful season since entering the Big East. USF went 20-13 on the way to earning a spot in the National Invitation Tournament. In three seasons under Heath, the Bulls have a 41-54 record.

Donyell Marshall named assistant at GW (AP)

Longtime NBA forward Donyell Marshall is joining George Washington as an assistant coach. The school announced Thursday that Marshall will replace Brian Ellerbe, who resigned to become an assistant coach at DePaul. Marshall was the fourth pick in the 1994 draft by Minnesota and played for eight teams over 15 years before retiring in the summer of 2009.

Kent State beats Akron for MAC title (AP)

Anthony Simpson scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Kent State to a 74-61 win over Akron on Friday night. Rodriquez Sherman added 15 points and five assists for the Golden Flashes (23-8, 13-3 Mid-American Conference), who have won five games in a row. The win earned Kent State the 2010 Mid-American Conference title and an automatic bid to the post season.

Uchitel lawyer cancels press conference (AP)

A lawyer for a New York woman who has denied having an affair with Tiger Woods has canceled a news conference that had been scheduled for Thursday in Los Angeles. Attorney Gloria Allred says the news conference has been canceled due to what she terms unforeseen circumstances. Allred tells The Associated Press in a brief telephone interview that there will be no further statements on the matter.

Deon Thompson had 23 points and eight rebounds to help No. 6 North Carolina beat Belmont Abbey 107-59 on Friday night in its only exhibition game. Tyler Zeller scored 17 points for the defending national champions, while Ed Davis added 13 points, six rebounds and four blocks. The Tar Heels shot 57 percent and took a 56-36 advantage on the boards against the undersized instate Division II program.

Former Southern Cal recruit Noel Johnson scored 19 points to lead No. 24 Clemson to a 99-51 exhibition victory over Francis Marion on Friday night. Johnson, a smooth 6-foot-5 freshman, had signed with the Trojans and then-coach Tim Floyd. However, he received his release after allegations of improper recruiting of former USC star O.J.
