Mets SS Reyes to undergo thyroid tests (AP)

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes plans to undergo tests in New York after doctors in Florida discovered a thyroid imbalance, the team said Friday. Reyes will have tests on Monday and it could take up to 48 after for doctors to receive the results. Reyes is not expected to take part in any physical activity while he is gone.

Japan’s Princess Aiko, the eight-year-old daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako, hasn’t been in school for a week, but reasons for her absence are unclear. In an odd public statement, an Imperial Household official said that the Princess had been unwilling to return to Gakushuin Primary School after being bullied by boys in her second-grade class. Apparently, she has been suffering from anxiety and stomach aches. The school, however, held its own press conference and announced, “As far as we know, there was no violent behavior targeted at Princess Aiko.” Here’s hoping the little Princess makes it to class on Monday.

When Louisville coach Rick Pitino looked at the schedule and saw the Cardinals would close Freedom Hall against Syracuse, he didn’t exactly argue. Sure, Pitino would have preferred to send out the venerable gym against longtime rival Cincinnati, whose 44 trips to the oddly configured arena are the most by any opponent.

NCAA denies Beavers QB Moevao sixth year (AP)

The NCAA has denied Oregon State’s appeal for an additional year of eligibility for quarterback Lyle Moevao. The Beavers asked for a sixth year of eligibility for Moevao, who injured his right shoulder in the 2008 season and required surgery before playing just one down early last season. He injured his right foot in practice in October and didn’t play again.

Iowa DE Clayborn pleads to lesser charge (AP)

Iowa’s all-Big Ten defensive end Adrian Clayborn has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in a case involving a taxi driver. The 21-year-old from St. Louis was originally charged with assault causing bodily injury after he allegedly punched the driver on Jan. 19, 2009, when the cabbie honked at him. Online court records show Clayborn pleaded guilty Wednesday to disorderly conduct.
