Two former University of Kansas athletics officials tied to a $1 million ticket scalping scandal at the school have been charged as part of a federal probe into the scheme, according to court documents made public Wednesday. Brandon Simmons, the university’s former assistant athletic director for sales and marketing, was charged with one count of misprision of a felony.

USC releases top recruit Henderson (AP)

Southern California released top recruit Seantrel Henderson from his national letter of intent Tuesday, the latest blow to a school reeling from an NCAA scandal. Henderson, a 330-pound offensive tackle from St. Paul, Minn., was one of the coveted members of coach Lane Kiffin’s first recruiting class.

S. Florida’s Heath gets 3-year extension (AP)

South Florida basketball coach Stan Heath has agreed to a three-year contract extension after leading the Bulls to their most successful season since entering the Big East. USF went 20-13 on the way to earning a spot in the National Invitation Tournament. In three seasons under Heath, the Bulls have a 41-54 record.

NCAA settles on 68-team tournament (AP)

The NCAA has settled on the format for the new 68-team men’s basketball tournament, though the announcement isn’t scheduled until sometime next week. The Division I men’s basketball committee reached its decision after studying a number of options and discussing feedback during meetings in Chicago, said David Worlock, associate director of the March Madness tournament.

UConn hires Ollie, Miller as assistants (AP)

Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun is turning to two old friends as he attempts to steer his program through an NCAA recruiting scandal. The school announced Friday that it hired Glen Miller and Kevin Ollie to fill the vacancies left by the resignations of staff members accused of lying to NCAA investigators.

Arizona WR Dean suspended indefinitely (AP)

Arizona coach Mike Stoops says senior wide receiver Delashaun Dean has been suspended indefinitely from the football team. Stoops issued a statement Tuesday saying Dean’s penalty is “due to a violation of team rules” but did not elaborate. The Arizona Daily Star is reporting that Dean was arrested last Saturday and charged with one count of misconduct involving weapons.

Cornell wins Ivy to secure NCAA spot (AP)

Kent State beats Akron for MAC title (AP)

Anthony Simpson scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Kent State to a 74-61 win over Akron on Friday night. Rodriquez Sherman added 15 points and five assists for the Golden Flashes (23-8, 13-3 Mid-American Conference), who have won five games in a row. The win earned Kent State the 2010 Mid-American Conference title and an automatic bid to the post season.

Murray St. avoids upset bid in OVC semis (AP)

Tony Easley scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots in the final 12 seconds to help Murray State defeat Eastern Illinois 55-51 Friday night in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. Top-seeded Murray State (29-4), which tied the school record for wins in a season, will play either Morehead State or Tennessee Tech in Saturday’s championship.
