Kent State beats Akron for MAC title (AP)

Anthony Simpson scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Kent State to a 74-61 win over Akron on Friday night. Rodriquez Sherman added 15 points and five assists for the Golden Flashes (23-8, 13-3 Mid-American Conference), who have won five games in a row. The win earned Kent State the 2010 Mid-American Conference title and an automatic bid to the post season.

Tony Easley scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots in the final 12 seconds to help Murray State defeat Eastern Illinois 55-51 Friday night in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. Top-seeded Murray State (29-4), which tied the school record for wins in a season, will play either Morehead State or Tennessee Tech in Saturday’s championship.

Arizona G Johnson to transfer (AP)

Sophomore guard Zane Johnson has decided to transfer from Arizona. The 6-foot-5 Johnson played in 33 games for the Wildcats last season, averaging 4.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 19.1 minutes. He started 13 games. Johnson has not decided what school he will attend, the university said Wednesday in a news release.

Coach Peterson back at Appalachian State (AP)

Buzz Peterson has changed his mind and is returning for a second stint coaching Appalachian State. The school announced on Wednesday that Peterson has accepted the job, three weeks after initially turning it down. He’ll replace Houston Fancher, who was fired last month. Peterson went 79-39 in four seasons at ASU between 1996-2000.

Tyus changes mind, will return to Gators (AP)

FBI investigating Pitino extortion case (AP)

The FBI is investigating the estranged wife of Louisville’s equipment manager regarding extortion allegations leveled by coach Rick Pitino, her attorney said Sunday. Attorney Thomas Clay said he spoke with the FBI about the matter last week but had no further comment. He represents Karen Sypher, the wife of longtime equipment manager Tim Sypher.

Mississippi basketball coach Andy Kennedy hopes to have his assault case settled on Monday instead of facing an assault trial in Hamilton County Municipal Court. Even if the criminal case is settled in a plea bargain, Kennedy is embroiled in lawsuits over his arrest in December on a misdemeanor assault charge.
