Two former University of Kansas athletics officials tied to a $1 million ticket scalping scandal at the school have been charged as part of a federal probe into the scheme, according to court documents made public Wednesday. Brandon Simmons, the university’s former assistant athletic director for sales and marketing, was charged with one count of misprision of a felony.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that a Louisville woman charged with trying to extort money from University of Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino had made earlier, false claims of sexual harassment against a businessman. Family of slain Pata hosts football camp (AP)

Bryan Pata’s family hosted hundreds of children for a football clinic on Saturday, calling it another way to celebrate the slain Miami player’s life. Several players from Miami, including Hurricanes quarterback Jacory Harris, and FIU took part in the clinic, although very few of them ever met Pata, who was killed nearly four years ago.

Big 12 reprimands Tuberville for remarks (AP)

New Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville has been publicly reprimanded by the Big 12 after an interview in which he questioned the future of the conference. The Big 12, which lost two members last month, issued the reprimand Friday saying Tuberville violated a conference standard that prohibits public criticism of members.

Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun is turning to two old friends as he attempts to steer his program through an NCAA recruiting scandal. The school announced Friday that it hired Glen Miller and Kevin Ollie to fill the vacancies left by the resignations of staff members accused of lying to NCAA investigators.

Arizona WR Dean suspended indefinitely (AP)

Arizona coach Mike Stoops says senior wide receiver Delashaun Dean has been suspended indefinitely from the football team. Stoops issued a statement Tuesday saying Dean’s penalty is “due to a violation of team rules” but did not elaborate. The Arizona Daily Star is reporting that Dean was arrested last Saturday and charged with one count of misconduct involving weapons.

Cris Carter’s son leaves Ohio State (AP)

Receiver Duron Carter has left Ohio State and enrolled at a community college in Kansas. Carter is the son of former Ohio State and NFL star Cris Carter. He has had academic problems and was declared ineligible for the Rose Bowl when semester grades were released in December. Coach Jim Tressel announced his departure Monday.

Ohio St. recruit shot twice in 2 months (AP)

An Ohio State football recruit was shot and wounded twice in two months, and authorities believe the cases are unrelated. Jamel Turner, 18, was left in critical condition by a shooting early Saturday in Youngstown. A 17-year-old girl was killed in the shooting. Police Capt. Rod Foley said Monday the case apparently was unrelated to a drive-by shooting on April 16, when Turner was wounded.

Kent State beats Akron for MAC title (AP)

Anthony Simpson scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Kent State to a 74-61 win over Akron on Friday night. Rodriquez Sherman added 15 points and five assists for the Golden Flashes (23-8, 13-3 Mid-American Conference), who have won five games in a row. The win earned Kent State the 2010 Mid-American Conference title and an automatic bid to the post season.

Murray St. avoids upset bid in OVC semis (AP)

Tony Easley scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots in the final 12 seconds to help Murray State defeat Eastern Illinois 55-51 Friday night in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. Top-seeded Murray State (29-4), which tied the school record for wins in a season, will play either Morehead State or Tennessee Tech in Saturday’s championship.
